Gardner man charged with sexual assault

GARDNER – A rural Gardner man was arrested Tuesday on sexual assault charges after a five-month investigation.

Kenneth D. Gonis, 49, was arrested Tuesday by Grundy County sheriff’s deputies and booked into the Grundy County Jail. His bail has been set at $100,000; he would need to post 10 percent of that, or $10,000, to be released from jail. As of Wednesday, he was still in jail.

The sheriff’s office began investigating in August after a Department of Children and Family Services report was made about alleged criminal sexual abuse, Sheriff Kevin Callahan said Wednesday.

Grundy County State’s Attorney Jason Helland said Wednesday that Gonis is being charged with criminal sexual assault, a Class 1 felony, for acts that allegedly occurred in 2007 to a family member who was under the age of 18. Because the victim was under 18 at the time, the statue of limitations is extended.
