Morris cheerleaders back to defend sectional title in Mahomet
So far this winter, the Morris cheerleading team has been tearing up the competitive floors.
“I think we’ve come together as a team from our first competition. At the start we had a couple of injuries, so we had to recoup,” Morris senior captain Morgan Hussey said. “We had two alternates step right in and they have done an awesome job.”
A first at the Buffalo Grove Invitational at the beginning of the month led into a championship at the Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference meet Jan. 19. Then in a tune-up for this weekend’s IHSA sectional competition, the Redskins garnered first place at another meet in Huntley.
“Our first competition [of five] we had no deductions and since we’ve had a few faults here and there but for the most part we’ve stayed strong and we’ve been working hard since,” Hussey said. “Our first ended up being huge for us, especially with all that had happened earlier.”
The Redskins are scheduled to perform at 9:28 a.m. Saturday at Mahomet-Seymour High School.
Morris will be competing with 14 other Medium teams.
Last year at state Morris was 22 out of 25 teams in the Medium class, finishing with a team score of 79.60. Morris won the Mahomet-Seymour Sectional last year with a team score of 87.97.
“I think it’s nice for the returners to go back there, but for the most part I would say that every year is a new team for everyone,” Hussey said. “We need to keep our eyes open and not second guess anything. Also, we can’t under-estimate anyone. We have some tough competition there, but I think we are ready to go down and do our best.”
Should Morris be one of the top five Medium teams to make it out of the sectional, the Redskins will be at state Feb. 8.
