CHANNAHON – The Families of Faith boys basketball team clinched its first winning season with an 18-7 overall record heading into Tuesday’s game wiht (Manhattan) Community Christian.

New players have helped shape the roster – of the 13 players, six were not on the varsity team last season – but at the core, the Screaming Eagles are largely the same. Their four leading scorers – senior Josiah Blan, junior Cody Blan, sophomore Brandon Cline and sophomore Vincent Dorantes – all played for them in 2012-13.

Also back in his second year as coach is Mike Blan, whose son is Cody Blan and whose nephew is Josiah Blan.

“All season, we’ve struggled playing as a team,” Mike Blan said. “And the last couple games, they’ve come together and started sharing the basketball, started doing their jobs and playing as a team, playing as a unit. That’s exciting.”

Josiah Blan, a 6-foot-7 post who (through Monday) averages 23.9 points, 13.6 rebounds, 4.1 assists, 3.0 steals and 2.9 blocks a game, said unselfishness is just one reason the Screaming Eagles are having unprecedented success.

“We got a couple more athletes,” he said. “We’ve been playing real unselfish basketball for the past year. The years prior, we’ve been pretty selfish, pretty worried about getting our own stats and stuff.

“I think a lot of it is we’ve been living by this motto right here, ‘Success is striving to understand a Christ-like Christian walk every day while serving our savior,’ and we like to put God first, and I think that’s what’s helping us.”

The Screaming Eagles will host the Southshore Christian Conference’s Final Four in late February, and they have hopes of qualifying for it for the first time. In 2012-13, they defeated Grace Christian in a SCC Tournament play-in game, but lost to Homeschool Resource Center one round shy of the Final Four.
