MARSEILLES – Operators returned LaSalle County Generating Station Unit 1 to full power this week, marking the successful completion of the unit’s 15th refueling outage. LaSalle Station Unit 1 was taken offline Feb. 10.

During the 19-day outage, Exelon employees and highly skilled supplemental workers performed more than 9,500 activities, including extensive safety inspections and tests, along with numerous plant improvements.

All the work and inspections are designed to enhance the facility’s operational strength and ensure LaSalle’s ability to run the unit safety and efficiently, according to a news release from the station.

“Refueling outages are critical in assuring plant safety and long-term equipment reliability,” said Pete Karaba, LaSalle Generating Station Site Vice President, in the release. “We look forward to generating, clean, safe and reliable energy for our customers during the two year operating cycle.”

LaSalle Unit 2 continued to operate at full power during the Unit 1 outage. LaSalle Generating Station is located about 75 miles southwest of Chicago near Marseilles. At full power, the facility’s two generating units produce more than 2,200 megawatts of carbon-free electricity around the clock, enough electricity for 2.3 million typical homes.
