Goodwill construction expected to start soon

MORRIS – As soon as the contractors are ready, the construction of a Goodwill will begin in Morris.

Building and Zoning Officer Bill Cheshareck announced at Thursday’s Development Review Committee meeting that the company was issued a permit and will get started “as soon as they can get through the ground.” No one from Goodwill was present at the meeting.

When contacted for comment Friday, a Goodwill representative said via email the company did not have information or a timeline to share yet.

The Morris City Council approved plans for the new facility, which will be located behind Aldi in Saratoga Business Park, last August. The address of the new 16,000-square-foot building will be 414 Arthur Ave.

At that time, Goodwill was proposing the construction of a store and attached warehouse. Originally, Goodwill was hoping to break ground this past fall, but city officials said then that during the planning process some soil samples had been taken and there were some concerns that could push the project to spring.

Cheshareck said Friday the company is looking at a seven-month timeline once construction begins and they wanted to be open by the holidays. The organization is ready to begin work as soon as it gets contractors on board, he said.

The store will employ 25 to 30 people, according to previous reports.

According to its website, www.goodwillpeo.org, Goodwill relies on donors to “provide gently used items they no longer want or need.

“Shoppers purchase quality merchandise at affordable prices. And the revenue generated goes to train adults for employment, prepare young people for life and work, and help veterans readjust to civilian life.”

The site also states more than 92 percent of the proceeds from the stores stay in central Illinois.
