MORRIS – Earlier this month the Morris Girl Scout Troop 70952 was given the unique opportunity to combine fitness and fun at one of the newest and upcoming gyms, CrossFit Morris/Synergist Athletics.
The owner, Coach Travis Tourigny, explained CrossFit to the troop as a strength and conditioning program targeted to improve muscular strength, cardio-respiratory endurance, and flexibility, according to a news release from the troop.
It combines a mixture of aerobic exercise, body weight exercise and Olympic weight lifting. The workouts are constantly varied to incorporate all aspects and movements, resulting in a different workout each time. Therefore, the workouts do not become boring and monotonous, as sometimes happens with a traditional workout regimen.
The girls, along with some siblings, had a blast trying out some of the exercises typical to CrossFit. Some of the new ones that they learned included rowing, pull-ups, ring rows, rope climbs, box jumps, slam balls, wall balls, and of course, burpees. They learned front, back and overhead squat forms. They also loved some of the exercises that they were more familiar with, such as jump rope, sit-ups, bear crawls and crab walks. To earn their fitness badge, the troop compiled a Workout of the Day using some of their favorite, newly learned moves and raced to complete one round for time. Fourth grader Evalyn Mateski said in a news release the best part of the workout was that it was fun and that she was able to do it with her friends.
