Celebrate National Library Week locally
April 13 to 19 marks the annual celebration of National Library Week at public, school and special libraries across the country.
This year’s theme is “Lives Change at Your Library” and highlights the many opportunities available to the community at your local library.
This year, our patrons can help change lives at our library as well. During National Library Week, Three Rivers Public Library District will be accepting Food For Fines. Bring in nonexpired food items and we will waive one fine for each item you donate, up to $5 a day. Donate as much as you’d like; even if you don't currently have fines, you will receive a fine coupon for your donation. Please note that fine waivers and coupons will be applied to fines on Three Rivers Public Library Cards only and cannot be applied to lost/damaged item fees or collection accounts. Each coupon is only good for one-time use and will expire April 2015. Donations will go to local food pantries.
To thank you for being part of our library community, Three Rivers Library also will be celebrate National Library Week with creative competitions, including special prizes when you “get caught reading” at the library and a grand prize raffle to top off the festivities. Be sure to visit Three Rivers Library during National Library week to get details of the competitions and to fill out a "What would you like to see at your library?" suggestion card for entry into the grand prize raffle.
In addition to National Library Week, we have some exciting programs ahead. Treat your mom to a day at the library spa May 3 or just treat yourself. Learn about the benefits of massage therapy from certified massage therapists from The Healing Spirit in Channahon while you receive a minimassage or facial mapping session. There also will be coupons and a raffle for a facial and massage. Registration is required. There will be 10 minute massages throughout the time frame, so if you are registered, you can drop in at any time from 3 to 4:30 p.m.
Pinterest fans, join us May 10 for Pinterest Pioneers. Do you spend your nights pinning fabulous crafts and yummy looking recipes on your Pinterest page but never have the time to get to any of those great projects? Here’s your chance. We’ll be recreating some fantastic food and decorations found on Pinterest with spring themes. Don’t just pin – create. If gardening is your thing, the library will be hosting an additional program May 13 by the organization Conservation at Home, titled “Rain Gardens: Adding Beauty and Water Management to Your Yard and Garden. Registration is required for all of the above programs.
Finally, it is with a heavy heart that the library announces that our longtime mascot, Sparkles the Turtle, has outgrown her limited space in our library and will be moving on to another library that is better equipped to meet her unique needs. To celebrate our time with Sparkles, we will be having an open house-type farewell party from 3 to 4:30 p.m. May 4. Please join us for cupcakes and photos with Sparkles before she makes the trek to the Stickney Forest-View Public Library in Stickney. Sparkles will be missed.
