Semitrailer accident on I-55 snarls traffic

A three-vehicle accident shut down I 55 at the Route 6 overpass on Tuesday.

CHANNAHON – All southbound traffic on Interstate 55 near U.S. Route 6 is now open after an accident late Tuesday morning shut down traffic for several hours. 

A semitrailer rear-ended a heavy truck carrying cargo at about 11:50 p.m. near U.S. Route 6, state police said.

Both lanes had been closed immediately after the accident at 11:50 a.m. near U.S. Route 6, state police said. Within the hour, police had opened up the left lane to traffic. As of about 2:30 p.m. all lanes were reopened.
