Minooka track looks for better results

Published: Friday, April 11, 2014 9:34 p.m. CDT

Minooka’s boys track and field team enters the outdoor season with four major goals. None would be considered modest by the standards of almost any program.

The first two goals are to win the Southwest Prairie Conference meet and a sectional championship. Minooka has done both during each of the past two seasons. It also could be said that the Indians have been achieving their fourth goal – to send as many athletes as possible to the state final meet; they had 11 state entrants in 2013 and eight in each of the two previous years.

Goal No. 3 – to earn a team trophy at state – continues to elude the Indians. They finished in a disappointing tie for 16th last season. During their nine-meet indoor season, they got a glimpse of how difficult doing so will be.

“The indoor season went well. We continued to get stronger as the season came to a close and moved in the right direction,” Minooka coach Nick Lundin said. “We were able to compete against some of the state’s best at the end of the indoor season and are definitely confident going into the outdoor season.”

Minooka had 12 boys qualifiers for the Illinois Prep Top Times Meet. Its team of Matt Szymel, Kyle Shelton, Jake Smith and Chris Wilson won the 4x400 relay there. Minooka also received fifth-place showings from Peter Andreano in the high jump, and from Devin Ingram in the 60 and the 200.

The indoor state showing is just one reason Lundin is feeling optimistic the outdoor season kicks off today..

“We had a nice surprise with freshman Brennan Loughran. He is a very good pole vaulter [and] is vaulting at a very high level already,” Lundin said. “Jake Smith is still working his way back from a injured ankle in basketball but is moving in the right direction. Zach Zamora is fighting his way back from two hamstring injuries. He should be back at our first conference meet [April 14 at Plainfield South].”
