SENECA – The Grundy and LaSalle teams did an excellent job in the “You Be the Chemist Challenge” (YBTCC) held earlier this year.

The 10th anniversary competition of the YBTCC was held in February at Seneca –South Campus. The Chemical Educational Foundation’s mission is to serve the chemical industry and the public by providing a comprehensive source of information and educational programs about the benefits, uses and safe handling of chemicals.

Winners and runners-up from 11 area middle schools plus one downstate open registration student competed. The open registration student, Esther Mathew of Dunlap, was attached to the Grundy team after she took third out of 53 students in the open registration contest.

The Grundy Team winners are first place – Esther Mathew, seventh grade, Dunlap Middle School; second place – Tommy Cahill, sixth grade, Mazon-Verona-Kinsman Middle School; and third place – Matt Schofield, eighth grade, Minooka Junior High School. The alternate was Carson Goffinet, eighth grade, Minooka Junior High School.

The LaSalle County Team winners are first place – Taylor Vroman, eighth grade, Seneca Middle School; second place – Nathan Meyer, eighth grade, Milton Pope School; and third place – Victoria Glynn, sixth grade, Parkside Junior High School. The alternate was Vincent Washkowiak, eighth grade, Oglesby Washington Junior High.

All three top winners of each county will advance to the state level, while the alternates will compete in a play in round for four open spots at that contest April 27 at North Central College in Naperville.
