Roundup: Led by Smyk, Rochelle tennis decisively defeats Morris

The Morris tennis team dropped a 4-1 decision to Rochelle on Wednesday with No. 2 singles player Jon Smyk beating Kalvin Parker, 6-2, 6-2.

At No. 1 singles, Ryan Asherman was defeated, 6-3, 6-0. At No. 1 doubles, the team of Mark Kijowski and Tommy Ochoa lost, 6-3, 6-4. At No. 2 doubles, the team of Matt Borgstrom and Chris Chaidez lost, 6-2, 6-2. At No. 3 doubles, Trevor Allbert and David Carlos lost, 6-2, 6-2.

“The boys are showing definite progress,” Morris coach Keith Anderson said. “They are becoming more aggressive as the season goes on and as our lineup becomes solidified.”

Minooka 4, Plainfield Central 3:Minooka defeated Plainfield Central, 4-3, in Southwest Prairie Conference varsity boys tennis.

Three of the four Minooka (3-2, 1-0) doubles teams were victorious. Those teams consisted of Dane Christensen and Caleb Froideoeur (7-5, 6-3 at No. 1), Cody Bresnahan and Mike Cappel (7-5, 6-4 at No. 3) and Josh Sutton and Nick Miller (7-5, 6-7, 6-2 at No. 4). No. 3 player Andrew Zurawski was the lone Minooka singles winner, by a 6-2, 6-3 score.

SOFTBALL

Westmont 7, Seneca 0: Jenni Nugent, Paige Hacker and Taylor Vandenberg had the only hits for Seenca (9-4, 1-1 Interstate Eight Conference).

BASEBALL

Seneca 11, 8, Serena 1, 4: The Fighting Irish swept a doubleheader from the Huskers behind a 19-hit attack on the day.

In the first game, Austin Applebee led the Seneca offense with three hits, including two RBIs, while Lars Pihl was 2 for 3 with a double and two RBIs. Cale Walsh also hit a home run and scored twice.

Walsh was the winning pitcher in the first game. He went five innings, allowing one earned run on one hit and two walks. He fanned five.

Matt Houchin earned the pitching win by going the first 61⁄3 innings before being relieved by Brandon Viken.

At the plate in the second game, Viken was 2 for 3. Pihl doubled. Cole Klicker was 3 for 3 with a double and two RBIs, and Conlan Callahan was 2 for 2 with a pair of home runs and three RBIs.

Normal U-High 14, 8 Reed-Custer 4, 6:Eddie Wilkins was the losing pitcher in the first game and Travis Schoonover absorbed the loss in the second contest with relief help from Josh Bull.
