Baker off and running with late-model victory
MORRIS – Defending late-model champion Ricky Baker of Plainfield won his first feature of the young season last Friday night to highlight the weekly stock-car racing program at Grundy County Speedway.
Baker overtook Larry Schuler for the lead and pulled away from Eddie Hoffman after a late caution flag tightened the field. Hoffman finished second, followed by Scott Koerner, Chris Cooling and Schuler. Brandon Clubb, James Gregait, Mark Sontag Jr., Billy Knippenberg and Dan Odell rounded out the top 10.
Knippenberg and Clubb won the heat races and Hoffman posted the fast time.
Defending Mid-American champion Tom Knippenberg claimed the Mid-American feature ahead of Kevin Gentile, who had set the fast qualifying time. Ron Willems was third, followed by Matt Clemens, Kenny Benson, Joe Vinachi, Chuck Yuris, Kevin Murphy, John McMahon and Cody Clubb. Murphy and Yuris won the heats.
Eddie Ligue prevailed in the street stock feature, finishing just ahead of Jake Bradley. Christy Penrod, who set the fast time, was third. Bob Davis, Matt Sisson, Renee Farren, Pete Morris, heat race winner Rob Scamen, Aaron Shleton and Cheryl Hryn rounded out the top 10.
Billy Rud won the pure stocks feature, followed by Mike Slabenak, Dan Schmeissing, Zach Sontag, Justin Mikel, Joe Lombarbe, Austin Blackwell, Steve Hespen, Rich Dearborn and Tyler Lela. Slabenak and Jeff Law won heats.
