Morris Hospital receives ‘A’ rating

MORRIS – Morris Hospital and Healthcare Centers joins a small group of hospitals nationwide that has received an ‘A’ rating in patient safety five consecutive times.

The advocacy organization known as Leapfrog Group has issued hospital safety score reports every six months since June 2012, and every time, Morris Hospital has achieved the highest rating possible.

Leapfrog grades 2,522 hospitals across the country based on their performance on 28 safety measures.

Leapfrog is not commissioned to complete the report and aims to keep the process objective by pulling data from several government sources, including the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. Secondary data is pulled from the American Hospital Association’s annual survey.

The report is offered free to the public and includes a full analysis of the data and methodology used to calculate each individual hospital’s safety score.

“We’re not submitting this to Leapfrog,” Morris Hospital and Healthcare Centers spokeswoman Janet Long said. “They started the reports because they felt the public has a right to know what kind of care they are receiving,”

Of the total group, only 251 hospitals – including Morris – have received an ‘A’ grade with every report.

“It’s narrowing down a little bit,” Long said. “So it’s really exciting to be in that select group that can say they’ve received an ‘A’ rating every time.”

Included in the 28 safety measures analyzed were how often wounds split open after surgery, how quickly antibiotics were administered before surgery and how often hospital staff washed their hands.

In several of the areas, Morris Hospital scored a 100 percent, meaning in the period of analysis, the hospital did not make a single error in that specific area.

“This is really looking at all of those intricacies that patients don’t often realize goes into the providing our level of care,” Long said.

Long said the hospital already keeps track of most of the safety measures included in Leapfrog’s report as part of the hospital’s goal to provide quality patient care.

Chief Nursing Executive Kim Landers said the hospital’s “exceptional staff” strives to give the highest quality of care to Morris Hospital patients.

“To get an ‘A’ five consecutive quarters is really a great accomplishment for our hospital,” Landers said. “It is a huge credit to all of the excellent clinical staff here at Morris Hospital.”
