Letter: Thanks to those who donated to food drive

Published: Wednesday, May 14, 2014 9:22 p.m. CST • Updated: Wednesday, May 14, 2014 9:30 p.m. CST

Thanks to all those who donated to the annual National Association of Letter Carriers’ Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive on May 10. In Morris, the letter carriers collected more than 4,000 pounds of food. It’s not too late to donate – just drop your donations off at We Care’s office at 520 W. Illinois Ave. in Morris.

This annual food drive takes place just in time to help stock up in preparation for the busiest time of the year for our food pantry – the summer months. When children from low-income families are home all day long, they are not getting the free lunches they would normally get from school, which creates an additional strain on the family’s food budget. That’s why we find the demand for our food pantry services increases dramatically in the summer. The donations collected Saturday will help us meet this need.

We Care is so grateful to the Morris Letter Carrier’s union, the Morris Post Office and to our volunteers, Ray Anderson, Jaymee Cole, Wade Huntington, Valerie Lewis and Darlene Sing, who spent their afternoon unloading and sorting food. Also, a big thank you to all of We Care’s regular pantry volunteers who are helping us put all that food on the shelves this week.
