MORRIS – Recently, the Morris Community High School Band held a fundraiser to raise money for the new uniforms they will be sporting next school year. However, their fundraiser had a unique philanthropic twist.

Band members were encouraged to ask their benefactors if they would like to purchase a pie to donate to We Care of Grundy County. As a result, the local food pantry received over 50 pies to distribute to the families that get help from We Care, according to a news release.

“The people who bought pies for We Care saw it as a good opportunity to help two good causes,” Lukas Terhall, senior saxophone section leader said in the release.

The band sold 344 pies, which raised $1,400 for the uniforms. With more than $7,000 left to raise toward the purchase the new uniforms, band director Don Stinson said in the release, “While we have a significant amount to raise, we are confident this community will help support music education and help us reach that goal. We are looking forward to our final performance of the year and fundraiser, ‘The Finale Concert,’ to get us even closer. We would like to thank all those who purchased pies to help us and We Care.”

We Care’s clients were grateful for the treat.

“Our clients have been thrilled to receive such a nice treat from the pantry,” We Care’s Denise Gaska said in the release. “Pies like these, especially the cream pies, are not something we usually get from the retail stores that donate food to us. We are grateful to Mr. Stinson and the band for their thoughtfulness in including us in this fundraiser and hope it helped them raise more money. What a great win-win situation for us all.”

You can help the band by purchasing a ticket to “The Finale Concert” on Friday. The tickets are $6 each and are available from any band member.
