Meghan Quirk and defending Class 4A softball state champion Minooka are the No. 3 seed of 20 teams at the 2014 Andrew Sectional.

Minooka and Morris joined local teams Gardner-South Wilmington, Newark and Seneca as top seeds at upcoming softball regionals, when large-school seeds and schedules were released this week.

In baseball, the area’s status is not quite as lofty, but Minooka and Morris salvaged a pair of No. 1 honors.

The most local-heavy regionals are both in baseball. Coal City and Morris will both participate in the Morris Regional, where the Redskins earned the top seed and the Coalers are third. Coal City will face No. 6 Streator in a quarterfinal game, at 4:30 p.m. May 26, and the Redskins will await the winner of the other quarterfinal game between No. 4 Ottawa and No. 5 Mendota.

The field at Morris this year is largely the same as it was at the 2013 Ottawa Regional. There, Coal City and Streator also played a play-in game, with the Coalers winning, 12-2. Mendota is the lone newcomer to the field, replacing LaSalle-Peru, which won the 2013 championship at Ottawa, 4-3, over Morris.

Only one other regional, the Serena Baseball Regional, has multiple area teams. Gardner-South Wilmington is seeded second and Newark fifth of the five teams there.

Morris, Minooka and Newark will both host and be the top seeds and their own softball regionals. The Redskins will await the winner of a quarterfinal game between No. 4 Plano and No. 5 Sandwich. Minooka will begin its defense of its 2013 Class 4A state championship on its own field May 27 against the winner of a play-in game between Thornton and Crete-Monee. Newark’s semifinal opponent is fourth-seeded Hinckley-Big Rock, which like Newark is a member of the Little Ten Conference.

Gardner-South Wilmington, which is at Grant Park, Seneca, which is at St. Bede, are also top seeds at their regionals.
