What is your specialty?
We specialize in dog walking and pet sitting for pets of all types and breeds. We are board-certified professionals through Pet Sitters International and are insured, bonded and background checked.
How did you get started in this business?
My attraction for animals started at a very early age, because I’ve always felt that animals provide amazing, unconditional love.
I started out as a volunteer at one of the largest and busiest animal shelters on Chicago’s southwest side. It was a huge wake-up call to see the need of so many unwanted animals. I also found myself bringing home litters of kittens and puppies to care for at home as they needed round the clock care and thus became a foster parent. I then ventured into the area of pet therapy by taking some of the more social animals to nursing homes and schools for the handicapped to educate, nurture and provide socialization to strengthen the bond between animals and people. Because of the love shown for the animals there, I was offered a position at the shelter. I worked my way up to becoming a supervisor of an extremely busy, high-paced animal clinic. While in that position, I acquired many basic skills of being a vet tech and dispensed medications.
Years later, I found that I really missed working with animals and took a part-time position as a bather for a mobile grooming business. After the owner retired, I just couldn’t go back to a job that didn’t include animals and thought, “Why not start a professional pet sitting and dog walking business?” So I enrolled in an accreditation course through Pet Sitters International and became a certified pet sitter. What better job could there be than pampering pets in their own home while alleviating the stress felt by pet owners of leaving their loved ones in a boarding facility where they are exposed to many serious diseases and illnesses? Pet sitters do much more than provide your pet with food and water. Through loving care and attention, we become a good friend that they look forward to seeing again and again.
Why use a professional pet sitter?
Just like the local plumber that comes to fix your kitchen sink or the electrician that is wiring your new home alarm system, your pet sitter should maintain adequate liability and bonding coverage. Also insist on a background check so that you may rest assured that you can leave your pet with someone that can be trusted, a professional. Another good idea is to ask for references. We can provide a list of satisfied customers with their phone numbers for you to call.
Who should use a pet sitter?
Some clients use a pet sitter for midday; someone who can come out and walk their dog, socialize with them, feed them and give them some one-on-one time. Doggie Doody does not combine dog walks with other clients’ pets, so there is no risk of passing disease or worry about dogs not getting along. Other clients will utilize a pet sitter for extended working hours or for travel and vacation. In addition to caring for the pet, Doggie Doody also will bring in your mail, your garbage cans, water your plants and adjust lighting and draperies to give your home a “lived in appearance” to deter break-ins while the client is away. Some pet owners may have a special needs pet that requires medication at certain times on a schedule.
What sets you apart from your competition?
We provide text messages and photos of their pet via their smartphone or e-mail to provide assurance that their pet is in good hands. We also provide a “pet report card” that gives more detailed information about how they did that day, whether they did their “doody,” any problems or concerns that may arise; just details that the owner appreciates knowing and hearing about.
