Roundup: GSW softball upends Dwight to reach sectional final
SOUTH WILMINGTON – Gardner-South Wilmington’s arch-rival came to town Tuesday looking to conquer the Panthers on their home field. Instead, Dwight saw its season end, as GSW beat the Trojans, 8-4, in the semifinals of the Class 1A Gardner-South Wilmington Sectional.
Winning pitcher Emily Foley made sure Dwight didn’t mount much of a threat, allowing seven hits. Only one of the Dwight runs was earned off Foley, who struck out one.
Maranda Residori spearheaded the offense for the Panthers, going 2 for 3 with a triple and three RBIs. Sophie Barna and Kylie King each had an RBI, while Lexi Posing scored twice.
“This was playoff softball at its best,” GSW coach Jon Posing said. “Not only was it the Sectional semifinal, but it was also GSW against Dwight. Both schools love to beat the other, so this was extra special.”
GSW (20-6) advances to Saturday’s 11 a.m. sectional final against the winner of Wednesday’s Somonuak-Chicago Luther North game.
Joliet West Regional: The Minooka boys volleyball team got off to a good start Tuesday night, beating top-seeded Joliet Catholic Academy, 25-16, in the first set. The good start didn’t continue, however, as the Hilltoppers rebounded to take the last two sets, 25-22 and 25-23 and win the Joliet West Regional semifinal match and end Minooka’s season.
Gardner-South Wilmington 4, Somonauk 3: GSW won the Class 1A Serena Regional on Saturday, behind the pitching of Blake Marks and taking full advantage of only two hits offensively. Jack Davidson and Kyle Robison each had an RBI single to lead the Panthers to their first regional title in 21 years. Marks allowed just four hits. GSW moves on to play Thursday against Chicago Luther North in the Putnam County Secitonal at 4:30 p.m.
Gardner-South Wilmington 1, Grant Park 0: An RBI double by Maranda Residori drove in winning pitcher Emily Foley with the game’s only run in the fifth inning to give the Panthers the Class 1A Grant Park Regional title. Foley fired a two-hitter with a walk and seven strikeouts.
Somonauk 8, Newark 3: Caroline Erickson and Kelsea Zitt of Newark homered, but six Norsemen errors were too much to overcome in the title game of the Class 1A Newark Regional. Losing pitcher Shelby Hoddy struck out five, while Lexi Zezanski added a double.
