Local task force trains 34 in responsible alcohol sales

MORRIS – Thirty-four staff members from local bars, restaurants, retailers and police departments were trained in responsible alcohol serving and selling.

The training was sponsored by the Grundy County Sheriff’s Police, Grundy County No Tolerance Task Force (NTTF), Illinois Liquor Control Commission (ILCC), and the Illinois Secretary of State’s Office, according to a news release.

It was held May 28 at the American Legion Hall in Gardner.

Participants received certification under the Beverage Alcohol Sellers and Servers Education and Training (BASSET) program of the Illinois Liquor Control Commission.

They represented Babe’s Tap from Coal City, Berkot’s in Coal City, Brandt’s, Braidwood Casey’s, the Coal City BP, Coal City police, Don’s Beer Store, Feeney’s Package Liquors in Morris, Gardner BP, LaCocina II Restaurant in Coal City, Mazon Shell, Minooka BP, Morris American Legion, Morris BP, Morris Shell, Morris VFW and the South Wilmington BP.

The training was based on a locally developed curriculum called STEPS (Safety Training to Enhance Profitable Service), which includes information about the effects of alcohol on the body, local and state laws pertaining to alcohol, civil liability, proper identification checking, and safe operating procedures and intervention techniques. The training was delivered by Deputy Chad Hrechko, Lee Roupas, ILCC BASSET program manager, and Investigator Thomas Manley of the Secretary of State’s Office, according to the release.
