Michigan man killed in I-80 crash

MARSEILLES – A three-vehicle traffic accident near Marseilles killed a Michigan man Sunday afternoon.

The LaSalle County Coroner’s Office has identified Edward Accivatti, 35, of New Baltimore, Michigan, as the victim. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The accident occurred at 2:47 p.m. Sunday on Interstate 80 near mile marker 97. Traffic was rerouted from I-80 for several hours while an Illinois State Police Accident Reconstruction Team, the LaSalle County Sheriff’s Department and Illinois State Police District 5 investigated the accident site, according to a news release.

According to the initial investigation, Accivatti was driving a full-sized van when he slowed to a stop behind a semitrailer. The semitrailer was stopped because of a prior rollover accident that halted traffic.

While behind the semitrailer, Accivatti’s van was struck by another tractor-trailer that failed to stop, according to the news release.

That semitrailer struck the rear of the van, continuing on to strike the first semitrailer.

The driver of the semitrailer that hit Accivatti’s vehicle, Steven S. Clark, was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid a crash.

The incident remains under investigation by the Illinois State Police and LaSalle County Coroner’s Office.
