OTTAWA -- The man killed in an Ottawa accident Monday night has been identified as Zachary R. Behrens, 17, of LaSalle.

At about 7 p.m. Monday the LaSalle County Sheriff's Office received a call regarding a car going off the road at U.S. Silica mined sand pit in Ottawa, according to a news release from the sheriff's office.

Witnesses had seen a car driving west on Main Street at a high rate of speed, Sheriff Tom Templeton said in the release, and then crossed Boyce Memorial Drive. The vehicle reportedly hit a curb, traveled over a grassy area and through a security fence before going over an embankment and plunging into the water at the bottom of the sand pit.

Behrens was pronounced dead at the scene and recovered by the Ottawa Fire Department and MABAS 25 TRT.

The coroner's office, sheriff's office and Ottawa police are investigating the crash. An autopsy is planned for Tuesday.
