With more people opting for staycations, a growing trend in landscape design is waterscaping. Who doesn’t like to relax and unwind near a babbling brook, fountain, or waterfall?

No matter the size of your potential personal paradise, whether a tiny lot or acres upon acres, incorporating water features into your landscape can transform a blah backyard into a lush, restful haven, and could be easier and more affordable than you might imagine.

Depending on the size and complexity of your project - and how willing you are to roll up your sleeves - you can do the job yourself or call an expert in landscape design.

Water features come in many forms - container water gardens, fountains, bubbling urns, waterfalls and ecosystem ponds.

The do-it-yourselfer with little time or space can easily set up a small tabletop fountain or container water garden.   If you want to go large, you can put in a pond or lake. Waterfalls are possible even in small spaces, and a waterscape can also include a water garden, with aquatic plants and/or fish, and even underwater lighting.

There are several types of ponds available to create your waterscape. A preformed pond is a hard shell you place in the ground. A liner pond is made with a flexible liner than you can make into any shape, or depth, that you want. A filter will circulate the water and keep it fresh.

That Perennial Place, in Morris, a family-run landscaping business, has installed more than 600 ponds and water gardens, from basic to extravagant, and offers a beautiful selection of koi fish to include in your waterscape’s pond. Their professional designers can install and maintain both residential and commercial waterscapes.
