Semitrailer and car collide on I-55

CHANNAHON – One man was injured when a semitrailer and a car collided Tuesday in the construction zone on Interstate 55.

The collision occurred at 12:43 p.m. in the southbound lanes near milepost 248, according to state police.

Master Sgt. Fred Rivera said one man complained of back pain following the crash and was transported to Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet. The crash snarled traffic for a few minutes, but the southbound lanes were not shut down, Rivera said.

Rivera said Tuesday afternoon he expected tickets would be issued once troopers at the scene had filed their reports.

“We’ve actually seen a reduction of crashes in that zone compared to last year. Usually there are three [police] vehicles patrolling in the zone to make sure people slow down,” Rivera said.

Illinois Department of Transportation crews have closed lanes on the Des Plaines River Bridge for repairs during the past two summers, leading to frequent delays between Route 52 and Lorenzo Road. There were 172 crashes reported last year in the construction zone, including two fatal ones.
