Grundy County Fair starts on Wednesday

MORRIS – The Grundy County Agricultural District Fair is celebrating 110 years of family-centered fun at the Grundy County Fairgrounds this week.

“There is something here for everybody,” said Burdette Carter, Grundy County Fair board member.

The fair will host vendors serving lemonade to barbecue, and everything in between.

There will be live music, magic shows and wrestling matches, all free to the public.

“One of the best things about the fair is there is no admission, free parking, free fireworks, and even a petting zoo that’s free for kids,” Carter said Monday as vendors were pulling in to set up for the fair that starts Wednesday and goes through Sunday.

New this year, is the Banana Derby and the Pocket Circus – “the world’s smallest circus.”

“The Banana Derby is going to be very entertaining. You’ve got monkey jockeys riding rescue dogs,” Carter said. “These aren’t just any dogs, They’re well trained and ready to entertain.”

The fair opens Wednesday with fine arts judging at 8 a.m. where the best needle workers, culinary artists, and horticulturists will vie for a blue ribbon in their division.

Music will begin in the food court at 3:30 p.m., and the carnival will open at 4 p.m. with $20 wristbands.

At 5:30 p.m., area girls will compete for the title of Miss Grundy County Fair Queen, Junior Miss, and Little Miss titles.

The Illinois State Truck & Tractor Pull will start at 6 p.m.

Magic Matt’s Family Fun Show and the Banana Derby and Pocket Circus will be available every day of the fair.

Livestock will be judged throughout the fair, and it will give people the opportunity to see the animals being raised on local farms.

“It’s a chance for kids to see live animals,” Carter said. “But they have to remember to keep their hands out of the pens and wash them when they are done.”

He said the “Blitz” pro-wrestling was such a success last year, they will be bringing it back this year with it taking place Friday at 7 p.m. They have also added a second wrestling event from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday that will couple rock music with Micro Championship Wrestling wrestling.

Fireworks are presented by Grundy Bank and the city of Morris on Thursday at the Grundy County Speedway following a free grandstand show featuring “Shindig,” a ’60s tribute band.
