Aiming to upgrade various protections at local schools, a measure sponsored by state Rep. Kate Cloonen, D-Kankakee, recently was signed into law.
Senate Bill 2934, now Public Act 98-0664, allows the Illinois Emergency Management Agency to provide safety and security improvement grants to K-12 schools. The new law amends the Illinois Emergency Management Agency Act to permit the IEMA to provide grants toward improving the safety and security of schools outside of higher educational institutions such as colleges, according to a news release from Cloonen’s office.
IEMA used to only be allowed to make those grants available to schools above the K-12 levels.
Cloonen represents the 79th House District, which includes all or parts of Braceville, Coal City, Diamond, Gardner and South Wilmington.
