WILMINGTON – The body of the man who drowned in the Kankakee River was recovered Sunday evening.

Deputy Fire Chief Todd Friddle confirmed the 33-year-old man's body was found shortly before 5 p.m. near the Des Plaines Conservation Area boat launch, west of Interstate 55.

About 10:45 p.m. Friday the victim and three other people were fishing off the shore of South Island Park. Friddle said they were wading when the back current of the low head dam swept him under the water. His companions were able to notify emergency services shortly after 11 p.m., Friddle said.

Water rescue teams searched the river until 4 a.m. Saturday, possibly spotting the victim in the dam 200 feet from bank, but were unable to reach him due to the dangerous turbulence, Friddle said. The search resumed after Saturday morning's storm and continued Sunday.

The victim's identity was being withheld Sunday night.
