Roundup: Foltynewicz impressive in big-league debut

The success of local pitching prospects in the professional ranks continues.

In his major-league debut Saturday, Minooka graduate Mike Foltynewicz went 2/3 of an inning without allowing a run. He struck out a batter, walked one and gave up a hit in the Astros' 8-2 win over Toronto. His strikeout came against American League All-Star Jose Bautista.

Not to be outdone, fellow Minooka grad Tony Bucciferro celebrated his promotion to Class AA Birmingham in the White Sox organization by notching a win in his first start. He allowed nine hits and no walks while striking out two in 6 1/3 innings as the Barons beat Chattanooga, 6-4.

Morris' Zach Petrick was roughed up a bit in his last start, which took place on Monday for the Class AAA (Cardinals) Memphis Redbirds at Round Rock, Texas. He allowed three earned runs on six hits in three innings in a no-decision. He struck out three and walked one. For the season, Petrick is 8-5 with a 3.99 ERA between Classes AA and AAA.

SOFTBALL

Tryouts: The Illinois Irish 16U/18U softball program will be hosting a tryout Friday at 11 a.m. at the Seneca High School softball diamond. For information, contact Dan Stecken at 815-326-2559 or dstecken@senecahs.org.

PARENT MEETING

Coal City: A meeting fror anyone who has a student that plans on playing a sport during any of the three seasons at Coal City High School will be held tonight at 7 p.m. Enter the school at the Events Entry doors.

PHYSICALS

Minooka: Minooka will be offering free sports physicals on Saturday at Central Campus, Door 1 from 8-11 a.m. This is open to all sophomore, junior and senior athletes. All student-athletes must have a current physical on file with the school nurse's office. Every physical must have been performed within 395 days to be current. Freshman students may use their freshman entrance physical toward their requirement. Sophomore, junior and senior students must turn in a completed IHSA/IESA physical form to the athletic office. These forms are available at mchs.net and in the Athletic Director's office. Contact the Athletic Office with questions or concerns at 815-467-2140, ext 135. Physicals will be given on a first come-first served basis.

TENNIS

Morris High School practice: Girls interested in coming out for the MCHS girls tennis team, please meet on the MCHS courts on Aug. 13 from 9 a.m. to noon for the first day of practice. Please make sure all necessary paperwork is turned in to the school nurse in order to participate in practice.
