Residents targeted in phone scam

Published: Tuesday, Aug. 26, 2014 9:24 p.m. CDT

The Grundy County Sheriff’s Office had received several complaints from residents who have received telephone calls and messages from subjects claiming to be from the Internal Revenue Service.

The callers were described as individuals, mostly males, speaking broken English with heavy accents, according to a news release from the sheriff’s office. Residents advised they were threatened with arrest if they did not act or call back.

The perpetrators of these scams will tell the target they are calling and there is a problem with that person’s tax return, are being investigated for fraud or tax evasion, or owe money.

A phone number of 888-369-8791 was given as the number the calls are coming from, according to the news release.

Sheriff Kevin Callahan advises residents who receive such a call to do the following:

• Get off the phone

• Do not give out any personal, credit card or bank information

• Attempt to obtain a telephone number and other details from the caller

• Report the incident to the sheriff’s office at 815-942-0336.
