MORRIS – Farmers are increasing the use of soil conservation methods which include many types of cover crops, mulching, no-till or conservation tillage. These practices prevent soil erosion, increase organic matter and improve soil tilth, recycle unused nutrients, fix nitrogen, improve the environment for beneficial organisms and can aid in weed control.

How are cover crops selected, planted and terminated? What benefits are achieved? Can we continue to be dependent on post applications of herbicides to control our weed populations? How will the arrival of Palmer amaranth to northern Illinois effect weed management programs of corn and soybean producers?

Join Mike Plumer, Cover Crop Specialist, for a session on growing cover crops and the benefits of applying this technology to improve productivity, increasing soil health and erosion prevention. Russ Higgins, University of Illinois Commercial Agriculture Educator at the Northern Illinois Agronomy Research Center will share current information on weed management in conservation tillage systems.

The workshop will be from 8:30 a.m. to noon on Sept. 10 at University of Illinois Extension, Grundy County, 4004 N. Division St. (Farm Bureau Bldg), Morris.

The fee is $15 a person and pre-registration is required by Thursday. Register online at http://web.extension.illinois.edu/gkw.
