The team score also included Kyle Smith, who was 25th (16:24), Sean Coyle, who was 33rd (16:34), Julian Hoshell, who was 40th (16:45), and Ryan Kelley, who was 42nd (16:48) with a time one minute faster than his 2007 performance. “The boys team ran today with a sense of purpose,” said Minooka coach Kevin Gummerson. “Typically, we have left this high-quality meet having been kicked down a notch or even two. However, this year we are leaving knowing that we have the makings of a solid cross country team. “Having six guys under 17:00 on a soft, slower course in a great indicator. That is a tribute to their work ethic. Keck has been looking really good lately, and I was proud of the way he kept moving up on miles two and three. Kyle Smith was so excited about this race that he went out flying with the Neuqua kid. Once he was able to settle in, he really ran a nice race.” Rachael Williams placed the Minooka girls and ended up 17th overall (19:28). In addition, Maggie Raynor was 25th (19:50), Rachel Morman was 29th (20:02), Maddie Simon was 35th (20:14) and Kaitlin Hoy was 43rd (20:25). “We attend this meet with the intent of mixing it up with some outstanding teams, and today these girls responded to the quality competition,” said Gummerson. “While we ended up seventh, we were in the mix with six teams that are all ranked in the preseason polls. We are actually leaving this meet with some confidence and some excitement about what we will accomplish this season. “Our top-five split was 58 seconds, with Rachael running a 19:28 on a true cross-country course. Another great measurement is the fact that we had five girls under 20:25 on this course. This was a great first Saturday of competition.” Minooka placed fifth with 145 points in the sophomore boys race. Ben Heidi was 10th overall (17:15), and Andrew Carpenter was 18th (17:33). The Indians were sixth with 170 points in the sophomore girls race, with Sasha Litt ending up in 25th place (21:53) and Nicole Johnson right behind in 26th (21:54). I suppose it's been a pretty good week for the Chicago Cubs ... though there's a ton of work left to be done if the Cubs want to get back in a position to contend for a championship.

Lincecum, Greinke win Cy Young awards

Zack Greinke justly won the American League Cy Young award earlier this week. I'm not so sure Tim Lincecum of San Francisco deserved his second straight win in the NL, which he received today.
