Grade School basketball heating up

Area grade school girls basketball action has heated up in the past week while the boys' slate of games has just kicked off the season.

GIRLS BASKETBALL Seneca 23, Saratoga 9 Seneca (9-4) won the contest behind a 14 point game by Cortney Helms. Molly Novotney added 4 points. For Saratoga (11-2), Katie Chatten had 2 points and 3 rebounds, Paige Cordrey had 2 points, 5 rebounds and 4 steals and Laney Torkelson had 3 points, 4 rebounds and 2 steals. Additionally, Markie Day had 2 points, Sydney Corrigan had a steal, Jenna Carpenter 5 rebounds and Nikole Eliakis a rebound. In the seventh grade game, Seneca won 17-10. Seneca remained undefeated (13-0) behind 6 points by Rylee Anderson's 6 points while Sarah Radke added 3 points. Saratoga (6-7) was led in scoring by Jenny Campos with 4 points and she also added 3 rebounds, 3 steals and an assist while A.J. Johnson had 2 points, 5 rebounds and a steal. Also, Amber Chlebek had 2 points, 3 rebounds and an assist, Ashley Bojovic had 2 points and 2 steals, Marcia Phelps had 4 rebounds, Taylor Vandenberg had 3 rebounds and Jade Fischer 2 rebounds.

Seneca 27, MVK 10 SENECA - Chelsie McCormick scored 8 points and Courtney Helms had 6, and the Lady Raiders (8-4) defeated Mazon-Verona-Kinsman at the eighth-grade level Monday. They moved to 12-0 at the seventh-grade level by winning 19-17 behind 11 points from Kayla Haines and 4 from Rylee Anderson. Danielle Hauch countered with 11 points from MVK, and Malorie Misener had 4.

Seneca 30, Wallace 22 Seneca improved to 11-4 on the season with a win over Wallace. For the Raiders, Chelsi McCormick had 18 points while Cortney Helms, Jessica Elliott and Molly Novotney had 4 points each. In the seventh grade game, Seneca won 23-11 to improve to 15-0. For the Raiders, Kayla Haines and Anna Baker had 6 points each while Rylee Anderson and Courtney Booth had 4 points apiece and Sarah Radke had 3 points.

Reed-Custer 26, Coal City 24 Brooklyn Geers had 12 points and Donetta Shabani 10 points, 10 rebounds and 2 steals in the loss to Reed-Custer. The Warriors (5-8) also got Brynna Borgra with a point, 5 rebounds and 3 steals, Brit Crawford had 4 rebounds and 3 steals and Haley Collins added a point. In the seventh grade game, Coal City won 24-15. For the Warriors (8-5), Britta Spelde had 12 points, a rebound and 7 steals while Emily Halliday added 9 points and 11 rebounds. Additionally, Emily Smerling had 3 points, 5 rebounds and 3 steals, Kristen Pearcy had 4 rebounds, Autumn Grimes 3 rebounds and 3 steals and Karissa Perkins 3 rebounds and 2 steals.

Coal City 23, Bradley 17 Donetta Shabani led Coal City with 6 points, 9 rebounds and 4 steals while Brynna Borgra added 8 points, 5 rebounds and 2 steals. Additionally, Brooklyn Geers had 4 points, 5 rebounds and 4 steals, Alisha Johnson had 4 points, 3 rebounds and 5 steals and Britt Crawford had a point. In the seventh grade game, Coal City won 21-10. For the Warriors, Britta Spelde led the way with 7 points and 7 rebounds while Emily Halliday added 6 points and 5 rebounds. Additionally, Hayley Holmes had 2 points and 4 rebounds, Olivia Jakibowksi had 2 points and 2 rebounds and Kristen Pearcy and Morgan Leopold had 2 points each.

Minooka 33, Coal City 12 Coal City got 3 points each from Britt Crawford and Brynna Borgra while Brooklyn Geers, Alisha Johnson and Taylor Ringo had 2 points each. In the seventh grade game, Minooka won 32-20. For Coal City, Britta Spelde had 14 points and 8 rebounds, Emily Halliday 2 points and 6 rebounds, Kassie Aldridge 2 points and 2 rebounds, Karissa Perkins a point and 6 rebounds and Kristen Pearcy a point.

Dwight 33, MVK 16 The Mavericks (3-13) were up 13-12 at halftime before Dwight pulled away in the second half. Jamie Marques had 9 points for MVK while Josie Lanter, Madison Wess and Mariah Bright had 2 points each. MVK (12-4) won the seventh grade game 20-6. Mallory Misener led the Mavericks with 12 points while Taylor Creed added 6 markers.

Saratoga 30, Elwood 9 Laney Torkelson scored 8 points with 6 rebounds, leading Morris Saratoga to a 30-9 eighth-grade girls basketball defeat of Elwood. Sydney Corrigan turned in 5 points for the Lady Hawks (12-2) and matched Nikole Eliakis for the team lead in steals with 2. Paige Cordrey (8 rebounds) and Cella Toups had 4 points, with Bernadette Cheshareck getting 3 points and Jenna Carpenter, Markie Day and Jessie Eastman adding 2. Ashley Bojovic scored 6 points, but Saratoga (6-8) lost 24-18 at the seventh-grade level. Amber Chlebek turned in 4 points and 8 rebounds as Kelsey Odom, Marcia Phelps and Taylor Vandenberg had 2 points and Jenny Campos and Lauren Severson each scored a point. Sam Limbach led Saratoga (4-3) to a 9-8 sixth-grade “A” win with 5 points, 6 rebounds and 6 steals. Other standouts were Peighton Shannon (8 rebounds) and Taya Torkelson with 2 points, Adrianna Escobedo and Amber Misek with multiple rebounds and Taylor Cole and Emma Thomas with at least 1 steal. Escobedo scored 4 points, but the Lady Hawks (5-2) lost 24-11 in the sixth-grade “B” game. They got 2 points from Dana Couwenhoven, Morganne Gretz and Alexa Thorson, a point from Thomas and rebounds from Jackie Godinez and Halcomb.

Seneca 25, Dwight 11 SENECA - Chelsie McCormick scored 10 points to lead Seneca (10-4) on Thursday to the eighth-grade win. Courtney Helms had 7 points and Jessica Elliott 4. Anna Baker put in 8 points to lead the Lady Raiders (14-0) in a 23-15 seventh-grade victory. Jacey Lamboley scored 6 points, and Shawna Bratcher turned in 4.

Gardner 30, MVK 14 Jamie Marques scored 14 points and Alex Hardie grabbed 7 rebounds Thursday for Mazon-Verona-Kinsman (3-13) in its eighth-grade loss. MVK (13-4) won the seventh-grade game 28-19 behind 9 points and 4 rebounds from Danielle Hauch, 8 points and 3 steals from Mallory Misener, 5 points from Maggie Thomas and 4 points from Taylor Creed.

Saratoga 33, Wilmington 13 For the Hawks (13-2), Laney Torkelson had 9 points, 4 rebounds and a steal while Paige Cordrey had 6 points, 3 rebounds and 2 steals. Additionally, Sydney Corrigan had 6 points, 3 rebounds and a steal, Katie Chatten had 4 points, 5 rebounds, 4 steals and an assist, Cella Toups had 6 rebounds, Nikole Eliakis had 4 points, 4 rebounds and 3 steals, Jenna Carpenter had a point, 4 rebounds, 3 steals and 3 assists, Jessie Eastman had 3 rebounds and a steal, Bernadette Cheshareck 3 points and 3 rebounds and Markie Day had 3 rebounds. In the seventh grade contest, Saratoga won 24-20 in double overtime. For the Hawks (7-8), Jenny Campos led the way with 14 points, 23 rebounds and 2 steals while Amber Chlebek had 4 points, 8 rebounds and 3 steals. Additionally, A.J. Johnson had 2 points, 4 rebounds, a steal and an assist, Ashley Bojovic had 2 points, 2 rebounds and a steal, Taylor Vandenberg 8 rebounds and an assist, Lauren Severson had 2 points, 5 rebounds and 3 steals, Marcia Phelps had 7 rebounds and 2 steals, Jade Fisher had 3 rebounds and a steal, Jacqueline Murphy had a rebound, Robbi Hicks had a rebound and Brooke Evans a rebound.

Wilmington 30, Coal City 28 Coal City slipped to 5-9 on the season with the loss to Wilmington. Contributing for the Warriors were: Donetta Shabani (9 points, 7 rebounds, 4 steals), Brooklyn Geers (6 points, 4 rebounds,2 steals), Alisha Johnson (4 points, 11 rebounds, 2 steals), Brynna Borgra (2 points, 4 rebounds, 3 steals), Keegan Kenney (2 points, 4 rebounds), Lynnsey Bogash (2 points) and Kim Onsen (1 point). In the seventh grade game, Coal City won 34-22. For the Warriors (9-5) , Emily Halliday had 10 points and 8 rebounds, Britta Spelde had 10 points and 5 rebounds, Autumn Grimes had 2 points and 6 rebounds, Morgan Leopold 4 points and 2 rebounds, Kassie Aldridge 2 points and 10 rebounds, Olivia Jakubonski 2 points and 3 rebounds, Karissa Perkins had 2 points and Kristen Pearcy 2 points.

SIXTH GRADE Saratoga 16, Seneca 12 The Hawks improved to 3-3 on the season with the win. Sam Limbach led Saratoga with 2 points, 4 rebounds and 3 steals while Amber Misek added 2 points, 2 rebounds and 2 steals. Additionally, Taya Torkelson had 4 points, 4 rebounds and 10 steals, Peighton Shannon had 10 rebounds and 3 steals, Adrianna Escobedo 6 points, 5 rebounds and 7 steals, Taylor Cole 2 points and 5 rebounds and Emma Thomas had a rebound. In the 'B' game, Saratoga won 14-8. Leading Saratoga were: Dana Couwenhoven (2 points, 1 rebound), Morganne Gretz (3 rebounds, 1 assist), Alexa Thorson (8 points, a rebound), Alexis Halcomb (2 points, 2 steals, 1 assist), Jackie Godinez (2 points, 4 rebounds), Taylor Cole (2 rebounds, 1 assist) and Lexi Leach (6 rebounds, 4 steals).

Saratoga 18, Wilmington 12 Saratoga improved to 5-3 on the season with a win over Wilmington. Leading the Hawks were: Sam Limbach (6 points, 4 rebounds, 6 steals), Amber Misek (2 steals), Taya Torkelson (4 points, 4 rebounds, 7 steals), Peighton Shannon (4 points, 8 rebounds, 5 steals), Adrianna Escobedo (2 points, 3 rebounds, a steal), Taylor Cole (2 points, 4 rebounds, 3 steals) and Emma Thomas (2 steals). For the Hawks in the ‘B' game (a 16-10 win), Dana Couwenhoven had 2 rebounds and 3 steals, Morganne Gretz had a rebound and 3 steals, Alexa Thorson had 2 points, 2 rebounds and a steal, Alexis Halcomb had 2 points, 2 rebounds and 5 steals, Jackie Godinez had 2 points, Taylor Cole 2 points and 2 rebounds, Emma Thomas 4 points and 2 steals and Lexi Leach had 4 points, 9 rebounds and 4 steals.

BOYS BASKETBALL ICS 48, Nettle Creek 18 In the first round of the Grundy County Tournament, ICS defeated Nettle Creek. For ICS, Jason Matteson had 10 points while Danny Friend had 9 points, 13 rebounds and 4 steals. Additionally, Tim Gile had 5 points. Nettle Creek was led by Sam Allen's 9 points. A day earlier, ICS opened the season with a 35-15 victory over Shabbona. Brian Henry had 8 points for the Knights while Friend added 6 points and 3 assists. Ben Ortiz had 6 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists. In the seventh grade contest, ICS won 31-20. For ICS, Zach Rezin had 18 points and James Van Pelt added 8 points.

MVK 39, Ransom 27 Evan Vint had 14 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists for MVK while Josh Cortez added 10 points and 5 steals. Chris Lee had 6 points and 7 rebounds. In the seventh grade game, MVK won 44-9. James Miller had 12 points, including a pair of 3-point field goals. Brian David had 5 points.

Nettle Creek 65, Serena 38 The Foxes were victorious behind 33 points by Sam Allen while Jonathan Turman added 18 points. Additionally, Viktor Nussbaumer scored 10 points and Scott Brackett 4 points. Dino Meucci had several assists and rebounds. Mike Grommen was also active on the court.

FIFTH AND SIXTH GRADE In fifth and sixth grade boys basketball action in recent days, Nettle Creek lost to Harding, Sheridan and Lisbon but defeated Rutland. Seneca opened its 2008 season Monday by splitting a pair of home games versus Milton Pope.

Harding 34, Nettle Creek 23 Cole Krug led Harding with 12 points. The Nettle Creek Foxes, coached by Greg Butterfield and Brian Laughary, were led in scoring by Tyler Post, Jacob Brady and Victor Toussaint with 6 points each while Robbie Meucci had 3 points and Brian Haldorson 2 points. Neal Smith kicked in with 4 rebounds.

Sheridan 25, Nettle Creek 21 For Nettle Creek, Tyler Post led the team with 9 points while Jacob Brady had 8 points and Robbie Meucci had 4 points. Victor Toussaint, Brain Haldorson and Jacob Putty led the team in rebounding.

Lisbon 46, Nettle Creek 32 Adam Shorkey scored 17 points for Lisbon in the win. Karter Kunkle and Noah Nichols also led the team in scoring. Levi Hagan and Austin Dike had 2 points each. For Nettle Creek, Tyler Post paced the team with 17 points while Robbi Meucci added 7. Also, Jacob Brady had 6 points and Jake Jurastis had 2 points each. Jacob Putty, Victor Toussaint and Brian Haldorson also helped the offense go with their rebounds and assists.

Nettle Creek 24, Rutland 16 Tyler Post once again led the Foxes in scoring by recording 10 points while Jacob Brady added 8 points. Jake Putty, Victor Toussaint and Robbie Meucci each added 2 points. Jake Jurastis led Nettle Creek with 8 rebounds and he also garnered a steal and an assist. Neal Smith also played a role with a pair of rebounds and Brian Haldorson also had a good all around game. Rutland was led in scoring by Sean Daugherty and Nathan Hess. Each had 4 points each. John Pepko, Carter Guilandri, Jaxon Fogerty and Morgan Branson had 2 points apiece.

Milton Pope 45, Seneca 27 In the eighth-grade game, Logan Pifer led the Raiders (0-1) with 6 points, 5 steals, 7 rebounds and 3 assists. Gary Wantroba provided 6 points and Grant Shenberg 4. Brent Bergeson had 4 points and 3 steals. David Hamilton and Jimmy David pulled down 8 rebounds apiece. Seneca split, taking a 40-25 decision in the seventh-grade outing as Alex Bott had 8 points, 7 rebounds and a trio of steals. Austin Applebee and Clayton Cole had 6 points each. Applebee and Kyle Boyd came up with 4 steals.

Serena 37, Nettle Creek 24 Tyler Post had 16 points for Nettle Creek while Robbie Meucci and Jacoby Brady had 4 points each. Jacob Putty, Brian Haldorson and Victor Toussaint had a rebound each. Neal Smith also added 2 steals and 2 rebounds.

Lincecum, Greinke win Cy Young awards

Zack Greinke justly won the American League Cy Young award earlier this week. I'm not so sure Tim Lincecum of San Francisco deserved his second straight win in the NL, which he received today.
