Grundy EMA secures reimbursement for flood expenses
Last month, the county of Grundy, along with several taxing districts throughout the county, received some good financial news.
They learned they would be reimbursed for a percentage of costs expended last September to combat the heavy flooding rains the area experienced.
The work was spearheaded by the Grundy County Emergency Management Agency, a department of the county that handles emergency situations like floods, tornados, and industrial incidents/accidents, as well as, most recently, working with the Grundy County Health Department to address the H1N1 Influenza (Swine Flu) outbreak.
Last year, after the governor of Illinois declared Grundy County a disaster area, FEMA announced it would be visiting to assess the damages, and offer financial assistance. The EMA team, led by EMA Director Jim Lutz, worked with local communities to fill out the proper paper work, calculate eligible expenses and facilitated the process.
Up to 75 percent of a taxing district’s expenses could be applied and potentially reimbursed back to the taxpayers of Grundy County.
Among the taxing districts to receive funds reimbursed by the federal government were Mazon-Verona-Kinsman School District, which received $1,064.22; the village of Coal City, $44,814.62; village of Diamond, $20,216.69; Greenfield Township, $6,484.95; Highland Township, $2,207.48; village of Mazon, $6,189.39; Wauponsee Road District, $1,817.85; Claypool Drainage & Levee District, $2,475; and Grundy County, $6,071.15.
The total federal dollar amount that was reimbursed locally was $91,341.35.
