Tax bills coming to your mailbox
Miller mailed out bills nearing $130 million
Property tax bills totaling $129.8 million were mailed already this month by Grundy County Treasurer Marcy Miller.
Most property owners in the county who pay their own property taxes should receive their bills in the next few days, if they have not arrived already.
“We are up about $17 million over last year,” Miller said.
The first installment of property taxes is due on June 4, with the second installment set for payment by Sept. 4.
For the first time, Miller said, a red pamphlet that explains property taxes, plus available exemptions, was mailed with tax bills. While the pamphlet has been available in the past, it was not mailed with the bills.
As was reported previously, all townships received a positive multiplier, so the assessed value of most residential property in the county has increased.
Residents of the Coal City Unit District 1 pay the lowest tax rate.
The Coal City school district has a very low total tax rate of 2.77 percent, due in large part to the Dresden Nuclear Power Station.
Coal City Unit 1 residents have a total tax rate of about 4.5 to 5.0 percent, depending on exactly where they live.
Despite the low rate Coal City Unit 1 will receive about $21.7 million in property taxes this summer.
Most other property owners in the county pay at a rate between 6.0 and 8.0 percent.
On a $300,000 house, assessed at $100,000, the difference between a tax rate of 4.5 and 6.5 percent is $2,000.
Grundy County will receive about $13 million in property taxes.
Property taxes to school districts in the county include Minooka Grade, $14.1 million; Minooka High, $11.8 million from Grundy County; Morris District 101, $8.3 million; Morris District 54, $7.5 million; Saratoga 60C, $5.6 million; Gardner-South Wilmington High, $1.5 million; Nettle Creek Grade, $1.1 million; MVK Grade, $2.5 million; Gardner Grade, $547,611; South Wilmington Grade, $523,251; and Braceville Grade, $454,369.
