Investigation continues into cause of fatal crash

By Jo Ann Hustis - jhustis@morrisdailyherald.com

A Pontiac man is dead after a one-vehicle accident early Friday evening on Interstate 55, just south of milepost 232, near Braidwood.

Leslie D. Goswick, 49, was pronounced dead by Grundy County Coroner John Callahan at 6:50 p.m.

His office and Illinois State Police are continuing their investigation into why the Goswick vehicle left the roadway and went into the median at that location. The vehicle traveled about 100 feet, then struck a concrete culvert and flipped over several times, ejecting the driver, and coming to rest in the median.

“It’s hard to say what happened,” Callahan noted today. “He was headed south on the interstate, and for an unknown reason, took an immediate turn and went into the median.”

A heavy equipment operator for Allied Waste at a landfill in Chicago, Goswick was traveling home alone from his job at the time, and apparently was not wearing a seat belt.

Married, Goswick was father to two children. Callahan said the man’s wife noted he was very tired because he was going through chemotherapy treatments for cancer, and under a lot of stress.

Preliminary results of the autopsy Sunday indicate Goswick died of multiple blunt force trauma.

Braceville Fire and Ambulance Service assisted at the scene.
