Man dead, mother wounded in Channahon incident

Chief Pena confirms man shot woman, killed himself

CHANNAHON – Police Thursday afternoon were still dealing with the aftermath of what appears to be an attempted murder and suicide that occurred in the village earlier in the day.

The victim, a 61-year-old female, was found by police with an apparent gun shot to the back of her head. She was, however, awake and talking when they arrived.

Upon further investigation, the police found a 33-year-old male who had been shot to death.

An ambulance transported the woman to Provena Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet, where she was taken into surgery.

Channahon Police Chief Joe Pena said it appears the male, the victim's son, shot her before turning the gun on himself.

At 11:30 a.m. Thursday morning, officials confirmed late Thursday afternoon, Channahon police were called to the 26200 block of W. Highland Avenue. Shots had reportedly been fired in the area and a woman could be heard calling for help.

Upon arriving at the scene, police met with two cleaning women who had recently arrived at the home. Chief Pena said the women told police they were on the second floor of the home when they heard a woman calling for help.

"They ran to the basement, where they found a woman in a pool of blood," Pena said.
