'D' Construction to resurface Morris streets

'D' Construction of Coal City was awarded the contracts to resurface numerous streets in the city of Morris this summer on two low bids totaling about $935,000.

For the city-funded street maintenance program, 'D' bid $440,706.73, substantially under the bid of P. T. Ferro of Joliet – $543,596.83.

Gallagher Asphalt bid $563,162.73 and K-Five Construction, $571,353.

Mayor Richard Kopczick explained that, from the low bid, $117,070 will be paid by others, leaving the city to pay $323,636.83.

For the resurfacing to be done with Motor Fuel Tax funds, 'D' submitted a low bid of $494,268, well under the bids of Gallagher Asphalt, $521,311.08; Ferro, $580,462.83; and K-Five Construction, $633,003.

For crack filling and pavement marking, Tri-State Asphalt submitted the low bid of $103,562.30, while Marking Specialists Corp. bid $114,835.

For sidewalk replacement, using Motor Fuel Tax funds, Anderson Concrete of Coal City bid $41,035.70, while Stott Contracting bid $45,581.96, and 'D' Construction, $49,663.

Mayor Kopczick explained the city's stimulus funds of $367,000 will be used for other projects.

"We budgeted $575,000 from the Street and Alley, $350,000 from TIF (Tax Increment Financing), a maximum of $525,000 from Motor Fuel Tax and $50,000 for sidewalks," City Clerk John Enger said.

Streets to be resurfaced this summer under the Motor Fuel Tax program, which requires Illinois Department of Transportation approval, are:

Fulton Street, from Illinois Avenue to Jefferson Street; Washington Street, from Armstrong Street to Gun Club Road; McKinley, from Division to W. Robinson Drive; all of Meadors Circle; Black Street, from U.S. 6 to George Street; George Street, from Division to Lynwood; Newton Drive, from George Street 158 feet north; Brentwood, from Lisbon to Parklake Drive; Candlelight Lane, from Carriage Drive to Lisbon Road; Kiersted, from Buchanan to Railroad streets; Shabbona, from Fremont to Edgewood Drive; Edgewood, from Park Boulevard to Deerpath; Park, north from Edgewood and Deerpath, from Edgewood to Lake Shore Court.

Streets to be resurfaced using city Street and Alley and Tax Increment Financing funds are:

Nettle Street, from Jackson to Goold Park Drive; Calhoun, from Jefferson to Jackson streets; Waverly, from Union to Lisbon streets; First Avenue, from Spruce Street to Mary Eddy Drive; Bungalow Road, north of Leah and west of Ashley Road; Chestnut, 302 feet south from Meadowbrook; Griggs Drive, from Calhoun, 400 feet east; Mission Parkway, 304 feet from U.S. 6; the unnamed street between Bedford Road and Commercial Drive by Walgreen's; the parking lot at the west end of Illinois Avenue; and the area around the new sewage treatment plant on Ashley Road.

The alley north of Washington Street and west of Fulton Street will also be paved.

Paving projects included in the city's bid, but paid for by others include:

The Illinois Avenue parking lot by the Grundy County Sheriff's Department, the west and east cul-de-sacs in Oak Grove Subdivision, and Michael Drive in Island Estates.
