On Sunday, July 5, the Tri County Players will be hosting a musical review, “Vaudeville Tonight” at the Newark Firehouse. The free performance will begin at 2 p.m. Re-live the days when America’s musical theatre was beginning to come into its own with a variety of entertainment called “Vaudeville”.

Visit in your imagination, Tony Pastor’s Fourteenth Street Theatre where a performer was either made a star or “murdered” by the audience. Enjoy memorable songs including “The Street of New York”, “The Band Played On”, and “Wait ‘Till the Sunshines, Nellie”.

Add to this selection from America’s most distinctive form of entertainment, “The Minstrel Show”, with rousing tunes like “Dixie’s Land”, and ballads such as “Jeannie With The Light Brown Hair”, by Stephen Foster.

Plus traditional western favorites including “Red River Valley” and “Clementine”, as well as Irish classics such as “Molly Malone” and “My Wild Irish Rose” will be performed. The rousing finale includes “Yankee Doodle Boy” and “You’re a Grand Old Flag” by George M. Cohan.

Cast members include: Heather Morgan, Cortland; Kari Frantzen, Tom Merkel, and Debbie Merkel, Sandwich; Chris and Christine Roe, Plano; Jim Stott, Yorkville; and Duane Christian, Newark. Matt Johnson, Newark, directs the musical.

Following “Vaudeville Tonight”, Newark families are invited to attend the annual Community Picnic at the park on Townhouse road.

Meat and drinks will be furnished. Each family is asked to bring a dish to pass. The picnic begins at 5 p.m. Following the meal, families can participate in Bingo. Prior to the picnic at 4 p.m. join the fun as the Northside of Newark vs. the Southside of Newark in a Tug of War contest.
