Channahon council awards roadwork jobs

CHANNAHON – The village board Monday approved awarding the Blackberry Lane reconstruction project to PT Ferro, the lowest bidder for the project.

For $372,623, Ferro will pulverize existing asphalt, install proper drainage ditches and structures and place binder and surface course asphalt.

Blackberry Road is one of the lowest-ranked roads in Channahon, according to the village’s PASER evaluation. The poor condition of the road, together with the fact it is the road leading to the Will County Forest Preserve District’s Four Rivers Education Center, put the project top on the village’s work list this year.

Midwest Testing Services will perform the material testing for the Blackberry project for $5,340 to let the village know if the density or compaction of the stone base or asphalt binder and surface meets the standard for that material.

Channahon will also spend $52,447 this summer on various road crack-filling projects. Bike paths at Springbrook/Serrano and some locations in Hunter’s Crossing will also be filled and sealed. North Suburban Asphalt Maintenance was the low bidder on the work.

Midwest Asphalt Repair will do some spray patching work in the village, as well, this summer, to the tune of $55,325. The contract with the firm is for $7.75/gallon for the HFE-90 oil and $20/ton for rock.

Midwest was not the low bidder for the work, but, according to Channahon’s Public Works Director Ed Dolezal, the village didn’t want to go with another, less-experienced, less-equipped spray patching contractor.

However, Dolezal said that, in order to offer competitive bidding for future work, the village is looking for other contractors to perform the work on a trial basis.

Gallagher Asphalt will complete unfinished work in the Woods of Aux Sable subdivision for $594,355, with funds from letters of credit put up by the developer. The funds from the letters total $945,485.

Gallagher will complete all unfinished work, except for sidewalks, street trees, and overland flood routes. The work will include grading and shaping ditches, fertilizing, seeding, installing perimeter erosion barriers, repairing damaged field tiles, dealing with street lights, adjusting valve boxes, excavating park site, and repairing sewer mains.

Any remaining funds will continue to be used for completion of public improvements or maintenance in the subdivision, possibly on sidewalks.

Cubs bring back Grabow, deal Heilman

I suppose it's been a pretty good week for the Chicago Cubs ... though there's a ton of work left to be done if the Cubs want to get back in a position to contend for a championship.

Lincecum, Greinke win Cy Young awards

Zack Greinke justly won the American League Cy Young award earlier this week. I'm not so sure Tim Lincecum of San Francisco deserved his second straight win in the NL, which he received today.
