Communities in Grundy County have set trick-or-treat hours for Saturday, Oct. 31.

Morris, Minooka, Channahon and Coal City have set 4 to 7 p.m.

Braceville and Carbon Hill, from 3 to 7 p.m., have the longest period, while Kinsman, from 4 to 5 p.m., has the shortest. Diamond has the latest, 5 to 8 p.m.

Trick-or-treat hours from 4 to 6 p.m. have been set in Verona, East Brooklyn, Gardner, South Wilmington, Mazon and the unincorprated areas.

Grundy County Sheriff Terry Marketti reported additional deputies will be working to try and insure a safe Halloween for children and to prevent the destruction of private property.

All candy should be checked by an adult and if anything appears to have been tampered with call the local police department.

The sheriff’s department has a hotline number to the National Confectioners Association which allows law enforcement agencies to contact experts to determine if here is a common flaw in the candy or if it was tampered with.

Safety tips from law enforcement agencies include: Stay in neighborhoods and go to homes of people you know, only give or accept wrapped candy, go out in daylight or carry a flashlight, wear light colored clothing and use reflective tape.

Make sure children can see clearly and watch for traffic. Adults should accompany young children.

Cubs bring back Grabow, deal Heilman

I suppose it's been a pretty good week for the Chicago Cubs ... though there's a ton of work left to be done if the Cubs want to get back in a position to contend for a championship.

Lincecum, Greinke win Cy Young awards

Zack Greinke justly won the American League Cy Young award earlier this week. I'm not so sure Tim Lincecum of San Francisco deserved his second straight win in the NL, which he received today.
