The season for the Minooka football team came to an end in East St. Louis on Saturday afternoon. Facing the very skilled and determined defending Class 7A state champs, the Indians fell by a 48-20 score to the hosting Flyers.
Darius Stewart scored three times while compiling 207 yards rushing in 22 carries in the victory.
The Indians trailed 14-0 at the onset of the second quarter but cut the deficit in half on a double handoff in which junior running back Kyle Banks bolted 74 yards for the score. Anthony Zalewski's PAT kick made it 14-7 with 8:40 to go before halftime.
Just when it seemed the Indians had things going in the right direction, however, East St. Louis scored on a fluke play. It happened when running back Jeremy Nicholson shot left and ran for 16 but he then fumbled. However, the Flyers got a turf bounce and receiver Jylon Spraggins scooped up the fumble on a convenient hop and went the remaining 25 yards for a score.
At the break, East St. Louis led 21-7.
The teams traded scores at the start of the third quarter with Minooka scoring on a pass from junior quarterback Mitchell Brozovich to Cody Carter of 4 yards and Zalewski's PAT kick made it 27-14 at the time.
But the Flyers pulled away with two more scores before the Indians tallied on a 1-yard run by Brozovich with 2:14 left in the game.
East St. Louis accounted for the final score when Stewart ran in from 42 yards out with :57 left in the game.
Banks ended the game with 120 yards rushing on 15 carries as Minooka ends the season at 8-3.
