Voters in the Coal City and Goose Lake areas will decide in the Feb. 2, 2010, primary whether to form a park district.
Associate Circuit Judge Lance Peterson, on Nov. 10, approved the petition to form the Coaler Springs Park District, which will allow the question to be placed on the February primary ballot.
In addition to deciding on whether to form the park district, residents will also vote for the members of the park board, should the district be approved. No candidates have been listed for the park board.
Petitions signed by about 147 people were submitted to the court, well above the 100 required.
A petition to form the park district was filed in circuit court on Oct. 6 by Chris Crawford with attorneys Jeffrey Jurgens and Nicholas Grojean.
Lee Thatcher appeared in court Nov. 10 and objected to the petition to hold an election.
The boundaries of the proposed park district would be the same as for Coal City Unit 1 school district. It would include the villages of Coal City, Diamond, Carbon Hill, much of Goose Lake Township and extend north to include the Dresden Nuclear Power Station.
In October of 2007, a meeting was held to determine the interest in forming a park district.
Due to the response, a Coaler Springs Park District Committee was formed and has met on the first Tuesday of each month at the Coal City Middle School.
A community survey was also taken to determine interest in the idea.
