Traffic stop in Gardner catches alleged burglars

A BRAIDWOOD man and a 16-year-old juvenile face burglary charges following arrests in Gardner about 4 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 16.

Eric Brandt, 23, 1126 Kennedy, Braidwood, was charged with burglary and possession of less than 2.5 grams of marijuana. He was held in the county jail for a court appearance.

A 16-year-old boy was released to a parent, pending the filing of a juvenile petition.

Another passenger in the vehicle, Matthew Schnurstein, 18, Braidwood, was charged with illegal consumption of liquor. He was given a Feb. 1 court date and released.

Deputy Brett Black reported he saw about 3:50 a.m. Saturday two men walking in the alley between First and Second Avenues in South Wilmington. He then saw one of them getting into a Toyota, which he followed on to eastbound Rice Road. The registration on the car had expired so he conducted the traffic stop.

Brandt, the driver, admitted while talking to the deputy of having marijuana. He reportedly produced a bag containing a small amount.

Deputy Black reported Schnurstein admitted drinking, while the 16-year-old passenger was in violation of the curfew.

Sgt. R. H. Coleman assisted Deputy Black. When searching the vehicle, two JVC audio CD players were recovered, along with a bag containing battery chargers, a GPS device, change and currency. Amplifiers and toolboxes were also found.

Det. Todd Horrie was called to the scene to assist in the investigation and the car was towed and held.
