Using the Air Quality Index, the number of parks per 10,000 residents, and the percentage of the population that chooses a green commute such as walking, biking or carpooling to work, or working from home, Nerd Wallet crowned the top 10 greenest cities. Madison, Wis., takes top honors as the Greenest City. This town, full of biking paths, lakes and parks, has superior air quality and a family-friendly atmosphere. Madison also boasts the highest percentage of commuters or those who work from home: 38 percent of the population. The rent index here is approximately $1,364, according to Zillow. The No. 2 city is Anchorage, Alaska, which has the best Air Quality Index ranking on the list at 2
