Opening statements and witness testimony began Tuesday in the double murder trial of Keith Mackowiak, who is accused of killing an elderly Seneca couple in 2007. Mackowiak is charged with murdering Aloysius Twardowski, 84, and his wife, Catherine Twardowski, 87, of rural Seneca, on July 11, 2007.

A trial day has been set for Christopher Vaughn, the man who allegedly killed his family in 2007 after stopping in Channahon while traveling during a family vacation.
• Anthony J. Serena, 27, of South Wilmington, was fined $195 and sentenced to 90 days court supervision for a Jan. 11 charge of speeding 73 mph in a 55 mph zone.
Kimberly Tatar, 53, was indicted on a Feb. 20, 2009 charge of official misconduct, a Class 3 felony. As an employee of the Illinois Secretary of State’s office, Tatar allegedly issued a fictitious driver’s license knowing it was against the law.
• A criminal complaint was filed in Grundy County Circuit Court against William P. Pogliano Jr., 31, 560 W. Southmor Road, for a Jan. 31 charge of two counts of unlawful possession of a controlled substance containing cocaine. He was arrested Tuesday, Jan. 31 and before the court Thursday, Feb. 2.
The Royals have enough young talent to make them the team most likely to stop the Tigers from ruling the AL Central for the next few years. But they're a year, or more, away.
Even with Prince Fielder, Detroit may have only the sixth-best roster in the American League in my book (maybe the seventh if the Blue Jays really put it together). In the Central, that is plenty to be the favorite.
